Holiday Homes on the island of Mallorca

Mallorca (or Majorca) is known the world over as the island off the coast of Spain with beautiful beaches and coves but it is also the perfect destination if you are looking for the best in picturesque countryside, golf, culture , entertainment and water sports. Measuring 80 kilometres from tip to toe, it boasts 550 kilometres of coastline, with white sandy beaches and secluded rocky coves. The coastal waters are blue and clear, making the island a popular destination for lovers of swimming and water sports, with plenty of opportunity for sailing , fishing, windsurfing and scuba diving. Mallorca’s interior is so varied, with nearly 40 percent of the countryside protected and of outstanding natural beauty. The Serra de Tramuntana Mountains in the north of the island have peaks of more than 1,400 m above sea level and the Cabrera Marine and Terrestrial Nature Reserve , which is a gathering of small islands about an hour away by boat.

The northern coast of Mallorca is rugged and has many cliffs. The central area of the island is generally flat and fertile and is known as Es Pla. The island has a variety of caves, both above and below the sea. Two of these caves above sea level also have underground lakes and tours can be taken to visit these wonderful sites. You can find them close to the Eastern coastal towns of Porto Cristo and are the Coves dels Hams and the Coves del Drach.

The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the Balearic islands (Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera) and was founded as a Roman camp called Palmaria on the remains of a Talaiotic settlement. The Balearic islands have been an autonomous region of Spain since 1983 and are a popular tourist destination for visitors from Germany and the UK.

Maybe hire a car and leisurely drive around the island, visiting picturesque towns such as Deia, Pollenca and Valdemossa, not forgetting the capital, Palma, an outstanding historic town with wonderful night life. Enjoy the wonderful Mediterranean climate of Mallorca, with its hot, dry summers and milder winters. Mingle with the locals and you will note that Mallorca has its own language of Catalan. The two official languages are Catalan and Spanish, with the local dialect being “mallorqui”.

Self-catering Holiday Homes on the island of Mallorca

Visit Mallorca for its rich culture and enjoy one of the many festivals, concerts and exhibitions that take place throughout the year. There is always something going on in Palma and the surrounding coastal resorts or you can escape for some peace and quiet to the small resorts to the west or east of the island. Maybe you would prefer to relax by the pool of your holiday villa, sip a glass of local Sangria and watch the sun go down over the blue waters of the Balearic islands. Don’t forget though to sample one of the 2,400 restaurants on the island, ranging from small bars to larger establishments. Olives and almonds are common to the Majorcan diet – try the “sobrassada, arros brut and the sweet pastry “ensaimada”. To finish the meal, why not try the local spirit of “Herbs de Mallorca” which is a herbal liqueur. You could also try some of the local produce in the privacy of your own holiday villa – some delicious fish or seafood on the barbecue. Why not try your hand at making your own paella, a traditional Spanish dish to be enjoyed by all!
